UK MISSING PERSONS
UK POLICE
If someobody goes missing, it can be vital to inform the police quickly so that they can assess the risks involved.

ACOPO Definition of a missing person...
Anyone whose whereabouts is unknown, whatever the circumstances of disappearance. They will be considered missing until located and their well-being or otherwise established.
Guidance  given to the Police

"Missing People" appears to be able to use information held by the government to find somebody's UK address. They cannot forward a letter (or even a message) directly, so they write to the person to ask whether they want to receive a letter. However, unless the missing person ticks the "Yes" box and returns the form, the letter is not forwarded. Also "missing people" is a charity which is very short of money, and only makes this service available to people who have been missing for less than 5 years. (This information was taken from their web site, emailed replies, and a phone conversation, and was believed to be true on 2011-10-30)

The government's ONS "Traceline", did offer a similar but not time-limited service, has now been disbanded.

In the larger US, services to find missing persons appear to be better developed.
